CommuniT
BEHIV is offering a support group for transgendered individuals. The group, called CommuniT, is a 12 week closed group for individuals age 16 and over. Issues discussed will include positive identity, strengths and struggles, risk reduction and safety and personal narratives.
BEHIV has identified a need within the community for a Trans support group as, unfortunately, this population is often under-served. I am very excited to offer a safe and welcoming space for members of the Trans community, and believe that the group will fill a gap in services. We hope to focus the group on personal identity and will promote empowerment and the use of personal narratives among group members. If successful, members of the group should be able to identify their own strengths, as well as strengths within their community.
Despite a lack of incident reporting by many transgendered victims, and the failure of some countries and states to report hate crimes, statistics culled from some studies show the threats faced by transgendered people. An estimated 200 transgendered persons were murdered between January 2008 and June 2009; or one person every three days. Additionally, 50% of respondents to one survey reported being raped or assaulted by a romantic partner.
